1.1 Research background探讨背景
English plays an increasingly important role in college students’ studies. Englishhas become a compulsory course in Chinese college for many years. Readingaccounts for a large percent of the score in English examination. Besides, we are in aninterconnected and internationalized times. It is inevitable that a great number of filesand instructions in every field are published in English. College students are asked tobe practical and qualified for future jobs. For this reason, developing students withhigh ability in acquiring knowledge effectively is of great help to their jobs. However,after the careful observation of students’ performance in English reading, the authorfound that problems still exist among college students. On one hand, uneven qualityof English achievement is one of the problems worthy of attention. On the other hand,students show little interest in English and cannot read fluently. What is more, moststudents are not intending to read related materials in extracurricular time and thislead to the shortage of related knowledge. Students cannot make full use of theirleisure time. Lastly, unsuitable learning methods bring about many problems. Forinstance, students pay more attention to the grammar and vocabulary rather than thetext itself, which ignores the development of comprehensive ability of languageapplication. Students do lots of exercises in order to prepare them abilities to pass theexam and most students believe that it is an effective way to improve their Englishproficiency. Lu points out that students are facing the high pressure of getting goodscore for their access to further study(卢建筠,2017). They reluctantly drill andmemorize vocabulary and phrases repeatedly. All of these problems arouse theauthor’s interest in digging into this subject.It is an extremely urgent task to arm students with ability in English learning. Bycarrying out this experiment, the author determined to explore a new way in Englishreading teaching and make students more competent and skilled in English learning.Many experts and educators have been doing researches into reading instruction.More effective methods improves English teaching and learning to some extent, suchas Communicative Teaching, Task-Based Language Teaching, Situational TeachingMethod et al.. However, the limitations of each method should not be ignored. How toperfect English teaching methods has caused extensive concern in modern education.In accordance with the conditions of our English teaching in college, cooperativelearning, a learner-centered method was adopted by the author in this study for thepurpose that students can not only get improvement in English reading but also learnsome social skills.
1.2 Significance of the research探讨意义
With the rapid development of the society, globalization has deepened thedependence on one another between countries. Quantities of papers and files areprinted in English which need skilled readers with higher ability in English reading.However, becoming a skilled reader in English is a great challenge to many students.It is more important for college students to learn English reading actively in a relaxedatmosphere.
