Task-based Language Teaching Approach and English Drama Performance on English learning

Abstract: Task-based language teaching approach aroused in 1980s which puts emphasis on “leaning by doing”. It was developed from the communicative language teaching and reinforces communication through interaction. The intention of the thesis is to find how English drama performance, as an effective form of task-based language teaching method, exercises the students’ integrated skills in English. The study compared the learners’ different performance of English learning during two periods by using two different teaching ways---one was the traditional way and the other the task-based teaching one, a way in which English drama materials were given to act out. The study finds that students experiencing drama acting score higher in English than the other students who don’t. Thus drama performance can fully reflect the subjectivity of students and highly enhance English learners’ motivation, initiate their active roles in English learning and thus improve the students’ English abilities overall.

ⅠIntroduction:
In the 21st century, the development of fundamental education in China has entered a new stage. Marked by the reform of the basic education curriculum, a new round curriculum reform is being carried out with the springing of new ideas, thoughts and development. But a large body of evidences shows that students are still stricken in the traditional teaching mode characterized by passive acceptance of knowledge. College English is a main course set in all the colleges in china, however, though multimedia have been popular in college teaching, the traditional teacher-oriented model in English teaching still dominates most of the college class. Teachers put too much emphasis on the systematic teaching of language, including the impartation of words, phrases and grammars which highlights the textual structure analysis and grammatical skills and neglects to build students’ ability of integrated application of language, thus limiting the students’ activeness, initiative and creativity and strangling their leaning autonomy. With the deepening of the reform of English teaching, English teaching should transfer from laying particular stress on comprehension of separate sentences or grammars to raising up the interpersonal ability to make students get sufficient practice concerning listening, speaking, reading and writing. To strengthen the practical side of language teaching may be an effective way to address the issue of "much cost, low efficiency" in foreign language learning in China. Constructivist learning theory is of great significance in this regard.
Task-based teaching approach is a practical teaching method based on constructivism, which abandoned the defects of the traditional teaching model and put forward a student-oriented approach attempting to develop the students’ interest in learning English. Nowadays, teachers who advocate to the Task-based teaching approach are striving for the effective forms to increase the students’ interest in English.
