ChapterⅠ Introduction


1.1 Background of the research
With the rapid development of social economy and economic globalization, there is alarge needs for skilled person, people more and more realize that vocational education is thenecessary part of our educational system, in recent years, guiding principle of vocationaleducation , training mode, requirements of knowledge and skill in our country have beenchanged greatly. One investigation shows that the employers have improved therequirements to employees who should have the ability of learning cooperation andself-control. It is suitable for the requirements of the vocational education development tocultivate students' general ability and skills transferable ability, vocational consciousness andlifelong learning ability. As everyone knows those vocational students have the greatdifference in English learning than before, many students lost their confidence and interestsin English learning. In order to adapt to the new situation, vocational school cultural basiccourse reform put forward new requirements on teaching objectives, teaching contents andrequirements and teaching evaluation of English curriculum in vocational school.The present situation of the vocational school English teaching is not optimistic.Research shows that English level of more than 2/3 students in vocational school does notreach curriculum standards of the nine years of compulsory education, the students are lackof interest and motivation in learning English, and don’t develop good habits of study andgood learning methods; English learning efficiency is low, the students are afraid of learningEnglish, while the teachers don’t know how to teach English well.

1.2 Research questions
All the problems existed in the vocational school are found by many teachers; however,few teachers can deal with them. After trying to use many other methods, people begin toturn to pay attention to the MI Theory, so this thesis studies the application of the MultipleIntelligences Theory to English teaching in vocational school. Since the MI Theory wasproposed by Gardner in 1983, educators in the world begin to study the MI Theory in allaspects of education, and obtain the great success, especially in the primary education, someeducators are studying that the MI theory is applied into the vocational education, becausevocational education has its own characteristics which are different from primary and highschool education, many teachers in the vocational school don’t know how to use the MITheory to change their English teaching. The whole thesis will be expected to solve thesequestions:
1. Can English teaching based on the MI Theory arouse students’ interests of Englishlearning in vocational school?
2. Can English teaching method based on the MI Theory improve the efficiency ofteaching in vocational school?

2.1 Literature on MI Theory
The Multiple Intelligences theory was proposed by a famous American psychologistand educationist Howard Gardner in his book “Frames of Mind: The Multiple IntelligencesTheory” in 1983.
