                  Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Higher Vocational Technical College (hereinafter called "HVTC")  lays emphasis on training students' practical and job-oriented skills, for the purpose of enabling them to be qualified for their future work after graduation. HVTC students will inevitably run into some translation tasks in their workplaces. For example, they may be asked to translate some English instructions of automated production lines and machines that are imported from foreign countries into Chinese. Moreover, translation ability is preferred when needed to communicate with foreign visitors in the production workshops. In view of the requirement, the HVTC graduates are supposed to acquire the proficiency in translating the original English instructions or introductions into China. But in fact, many HVTC graduates fail to do translation work satisfactorily, often misunderstanding the exact meanings of the original material and translating in an inappropriate way.
The consequence is that it will not only have a negative influence on translation quality and damage the image of their employers, but cause losses on business. Since non-English major students constitute the majority of the vocational  college  students, we should pay  much more attention to translation competence  training  of  HVTC  students  if  we  want  to  improve  their  overall performances. And the translation teaching for non-English major students in HVTC should have its own features, which distinguish itself from bachelor degree education and the translation teaching for English majors.
Translation teaching is the requirement of our times. It plays an important role in the communication between countries, so does it in China's social and economic development. With China's opening up to the outside on a broader scale and, especially China's entry into the WTO, there is an urgent need for translators at all levels. This also poses an issue on how to train qualified graduates in translation to meet the current needs of our country.
