1.1 Background of the Research
Code-switching is briefly defined as the alternate use of two or more languages inone utterance or conversation (Grosjean, 1982; Milroy & Muysken. 1995). It's acommon phenomenon in bilingual countries, and even in monolingual countries there isstill switching between different dialects. Therefore, its common existence in people'sdaily life draws itself much attention from the scholars of different fields. Since the1960s,many linguists have used different methods to study the code-switching based onthe sociolinguistics, the psycholinguistics. the grammar, and the pragmatics. And theforeign language teaching is a typical environment where code-switching is used, Apretty number of researches reflect that code-switching is a very common phenomenonin foreign language teaching, which is also confirmed by my own foreign languagelearning and observation experiences. I wm ihe past until now,英语论文网站,英语论文,scholars have beenarguing about the key question of how much the first language and the target languageshould be used in foreign language teaching, which makes it appears three majoropinions. Some scholars (Littlevvood 1981. f-llis 1984. Krashen 1985. Chaudron 1988)advocate only using the target language in Foreign language teaching, as they think thatteachers' code-switching deprives students' right of being exposed in the target languageas much as possible. The following audio-lingual method and communicative languageteaching furthermore advocate the use of target language in the Foreign languageleaching.

There are pretty much literature and research on the code-switching. However, the teachers' code-switching in EFL classroom in senior high school is a special fieldthat not too many scholars touch upon. Therefore, on one hand, this study will, asdesigned, substantiate the body of researched knowledge about the nature, the patternand the functions and the problems of code-switching in a senior high school. On theother, this thesis will enrich the fniits of studying the specific and spccial occasionwhere teachers' code-switching is used in EFL classroom in senior high school.2. Appropriately using the first language in the EFL classroom is a skill that allthe English teachers should possess. However, to make it effective is not an easy work.If not been aware of by the English teachers, it probably contributes to the problems ofoverusing or improper use of the native language in the EFL class. Therefore, thefindings of this research will hopefully contribute to proper understanding of andsolutions to the problems of code-switching in the EFL classroom.
