ChapterⅠ Introduction


Nowadays, China began to play a more and more important part in the world politically and economically, and the society requires more advanced English graduates who can do well in English listening, speaking, reading and writing. Hence, English education has become a focus in China. As the fundamental stage of English learning, there is no doubt that the senior high school English learning and teaching is becoming more and more important. English writing, as one of the student’s productive skills and a way to communicate with others, plays an essential and important role in EFL teaching and learning. However, in English class, it has not received equal attention as the other three language skills for a long time in senior high schools, which made lots of students find it hard to get high scores in written tasks though they have devoted so much energy to English writing practice. In order to improve students’ English writing proficiency, many teachers usually teach some skills, such as sentence patterns, classical compositions and the structures. As a matter of fact, these skills can not solve the problems. Nian (2017) has said, “Writing is an activity of which thoughts are expressed in a language. It is a language form of the process of one’s thinking rather than simply printing or recording those of being seen, read and felt in letters down on paper”.

Since there has been a remarkable change in language instruction from how toteach to how to learn during the last few decades, and the modern teaching concepthas changed from teacher-centered to student-centered. Further more, researchersbegan to pay more attention to the research on learners and learning strategies inEnglish writing rather than on teachers and teaching methodologies. Learningstrategies, especially meta-cognitive strategies are introduced to English writing field.Generally speaking, the research on meta-cognitive strategies in our country is still atan exploratory stage. Recent researches on EFL writing and meta-cognitive strategies at home mainly focus on the studies of listening, reading and vocabulary, fewer focuson writing. As for the research subjects, most of the studies focus on college students,seldom of them focus on senior high school students or primary school students.Considering this point, the author determines to explore the correlation betweenmeta-cognitive strategy and senior high school students’ English writing on the basisof previous researches. The author of this thesis hopes that through meta-cognitivestrategy training, students can improve their meta-cognitive strategy use in Englishwriting and finally make great improvement in their writing proficiency.
