1.1 Research background

Analyzing the errors in a systematic and comprehensive waycan provide us with a deep understanding of language teaching and learning. Theanalysis of errors mainly serves two purposes. Firstly, it provides us with data fromwhich inferences of the nature of language learning can be made. Secondly, it helpscurriculum makers and teachers to learn which is the most difficult part for thestudents to produce correctly and which type of errors detract most from learners’ability to effectively communicate. (Dulay, Burt and Krashen, 1982).Since Error analyzing plays such an important role in language teaching andlearning, numerous studies have been conducted on it from different perspectives bothby foreign and domestic scholars. The traditional ways of experimenting have somecommon limitations. Firstly, it is quite difficult for the researchers to find properparticipants since many EFL learners are not active in participating in the academicresearching tests.其次,即使是正确的参与者都发现,许多测试不及时治疗引起足够的重视,这往往会导致一个不理想的结果。第三,由探讨人员设计的测试,在一定程度上是主观的,不能准确反映参与者的真实语言能力。第四,尽管我们上面提到的所有问题,这是一个耗时的工作,设计和实行有效的实验。语料库为基础的措施将在本探讨中,采用同一个目的,避免了传统的实验措施的局限性。语料库可以为我们提供大量的存储,可以借助一些相关的计算机软件系统,有效地略论自然语言。因此,得到的略论结果,我们不仅更加全面,但更可靠。基于语料库的,我们可以有一个详细的调查滥用中国高中英语学习者所犯的文章。 Secondly, even proper participants are found, many tests are nottreated seriously enough, which will often result in an unsatisfactory outcome. Thirdly,the tests designed by the researchers are subjective to some degree and thereforecannot reflect the participants’ real language competency accurately. Fourthly, in spiteof all the problems we have mentioned above, it is a time-consuming work to designand practice an effective experiment.In the present study, a corpus-based approach will be adopted with a purpose ofavoiding the limitations of the traditional experimental method. The corpus canprovide us with an enormous storage of natural language, which can be analyzedsystematically and effectively with the aid of some related computer softwares. Therefore, the analytical results we get are not only more comprehensive but morereliable. Based on the corpus, we can have a detailed investigation of the misuse ofarticles committed by Chinese senior high school EFL learners.


1.2 Significance of the Study
In English, there are only three kinds of articles: the indefinite articles a and an,the definite article the and zero article  . Although minor in number, the articles areby no means neglected by the linguists. Articles are used in English with a quite highfrequency. In English literatures, they together take up a proportion of about 8.5%,which is a quite large percentage compared to their minority in English words. Fornative speakers, the definite articles the is the most frequently used word in most ofthe native corpora, Brown and LOB corpora and sixth in LOB corpora. The indefinitean ranks 29thin Brown corpus and 34thin LOB corpus. The inability of using articlescorrectly will render various types of
