Since Halliday and Hasanpublished Cohesion in English in 1976, the study of cohesion as a new field has neverceased. the researches that have been made, scholars at home and abroad haveachieved significant breakthrough. The focuses are mainly on types of cohesivemeaning and the exploration of cohesive devices.In general, foreign researchers pay their attention to the theory itself, including what aspect that cohesion should be studied and in what way that cohesion isrelated to the text, especially to the relationship between cohesion and coherence inorganizing a text, researchers in our country, however, mainly focus on theexploration of cohesive devices and the application of this theory to foreign languageteaching. The most outstanding scholars that contribute to this field are Hu Zhuanglinand Zhang Delu. Hu Zhaunglin extends the scope of cohesion phonological leveland presents the multi-level thought of cohesion in a text. Zhang Delu, d on Hu’stheory, further exploring the scope and types of cohesive devices. He first proposesanother cohesive device named cross-type cohesion which is defined as the cohesiverelation formed between lexicon and grammar.On the application of cohesion theory to foreign language teaching, eightypercent of researches that have been published in CNKI in recent ten years are aboutthe application of cohesion theory in comprehension and writing. Little research hasbeen done in the application of cohesion theory in cloze test. Since cloze test is don Gestalt psychology, it is a typical portion of text with certain words removed. the perspective of functionalists, a text is not just a string of sentences. It is betterthought of as a semantic unit rather than a grammatical one. The unity that it has is aunity of meaning in context and the expression of this semantic unity lies in thecohesion among the sentences of which a text composed. Therefore, the continuityprovided by cohesion that enables the reader or listener to supply all the missingpieces, all the components of the picture which are not present in the text but arenecessary to its interpretation. In this sense, the study on the application of cohesiontheory on cloze test is necessary and of great importance.
