Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Research Background
With the fast development of internet technology, internet communicative wayused by people to contact each other are more and more frequently. As we know, nowdays, the pace of economic globalization is accelerated so that more and morecompanies in the world take part in world’s market for economic interest. With China’sentering WTO, many Chinese enterprises take this advantage of globalization toparticipate foreign trade activities. Thus business letters play a very important role inthose foreign trade activities for its low cost. It is commonly recognized that businessletter is an indispensable part of communication, without business letters, much of theordinary activities of business would be impossible. Conflictive Business English (BE)Letter as an important kind of business letter, it plays a crucial role in resolving disputeand maintaining a good business relationship between two parties of businesstransaction. For this reason, it is significant to explore the interpersonal meaning ofconflictive business English letters.In Systemic-function Linguistics (SFL), Halliday (2017) proposed that languagehas three meta-functions: ideational function, interpersonal function and textualfunction. According to Halliday (2017), interpersonal meaning can be realized throughmood and modality system. And he thinks that mood and modality are main lexical andgrammatical resources to realize interpersonal meaning. It is easy to find that Hallidaydiscussed evaluation simply and his study on interpersonal meaning is far fromcomplete and systemic. This fault makes a great room for other ways to exploreinterpersonal meaning of genre. Appraisal language is one of them, according toThompson (2017:75), “appraisal is a central part of the meaning of any text and thatany analysis of the interpersonal meaning of text must be taken into account”. In 1990s,Martin proposed the Appraisal Theory aiming to research appraisal language in the text,which is a new framework developed from Halliday’s study of interpersonal meaningin SFL.

1.2 Research Objective
With the development of economic globalization and trade liberalization,companies in world join the stage of international trade to gain the greatest economicbenefits so the international trade competition becomes more and more fierce. It isinevitable for the business partner to meet troubles and conflicts. To establish and keepharmonious relationship with business partner, conflictive business English letters arecommonly used for its lowest cost to resolve those conflicts. All of the businesstransactions hoped to go smoothly in course of foreign trade, but it is inevitable toavoid the conflicts for business parties. For its concerning to gain and lose profit,people almost become sensitive to this kind of letter. So how to express each other’sviews of business parties in right way and achieve their purpose in conflictive business English letters? How to select resources of Appraisal Theory is very important forbusinessman? Standing on a different standpoint, it is difficult for both of the businessparties to using appropriate language to express their opinions.
