Chapter 1 Previous Study of Euphemism Abroad and at Home
Euphemism,as an ubiquitous phenomenon in human languages all over theworld , has been paid much attention to "by various researchers and scholars for along time. Being an important communicative device used in human dailycommunication, euphemism, to a certain degree, is playing a more and moresignificant role in improving and further smoothing the way to the relationshipbetween people. Dermis Joseph Enright (1985:29),points out that “a languagewithout euphemism would be a defective instrument of communication". Since theday of its birth,euphemism has been widely put into research by linguistics,sociologist, psychologist, humanists, and the like in various research fields.

With respect to the research of euphemism abroad, it has been explored bywestern scholars from various aspects many years ago. As early as in thebeginning of 1880s, euphemism has been firstly employed by the British writerGeorge Blunt. From then on, many scholars, such as Henry Louis Menken, DwightBolinger. Judith S. N earn an and Carole G. Sliver have done research oneuphemism form various aspects. In the book The American Language, HenryLouis Menken (1936:95-100) explores the production of euphemism and thedevelopment of its popularity in great detail. In addition. Scottish social anthropologist James George Frazer, being one of those who have done systematicresearches on euphemism, spares much energy to study euphemism involved intaboo language, action, things and names in his most famous book The GoldenBough~A Study in Magic and Religion (1890). Later on. British linguist HughRawson (1981) compiles a dictionary named A Dictionaiy of Euphemism andOther Double-talk, in which he makes a conclusion of British and Americanlinguists' contribution to euphemism. Following on this, American scholar Judith S.Nearn an and Carole G. Silver publishes Kind Words~A Treasure of Euphemism(1983:9-16) which describes the origin, history, development and changes ofeuphemism. Furthermore, Dermis Joseph Enright publishes his memoir called Fairof Speech, the Use of Euphemism. In this memoir, Dennis Joseph Enright collects agreat number of papers involving in the exploration of euphemism, which providesabundant materials for the subsequent researchers,study on euphemism. Inaddition, the book Euphemism and Dysphemism: language used as shield andweapon published by Keith Allan, Kate Burridge in the year 1991,is of greatusefulness to scholars studying euphemism from the perspective of pragmatics. Inaddition, it is also one of the works which are quoted frequently by researchers inChina.
1.2 Previous Study of Euphemism at Home
Euphemism, because of is popularity in almost every aspects of our social life,has been the focus of many researches, especially in the field of linguistics, whichhas achieved an abundance of research results. Since the researches conducted byChen Wangdao, the study of euphemism by Chinese linguistic researchers aremainly from the perspective of rhetoric for a long time.
