As is known to all, the two headless-wingless Greek Style Sphinxes in the first picture also known as a Chimera. The archaeologist found it in the Amphipolis Tomb. The tomb is on the hill of Kasta which has a 500-meter long wall made by marble and much limestone. At the first sight of the two headless-wingless Greek Style Sphinxes, we may find that how it inconceivable that the sculpture has no heads. According to some historic records, the sculpture got some destructions once a time due to the natural factors such as the Geological movement and some other human activities such as wars. What is more, the designer used human head and lion body to design the sculpture. In my personal view, I think it is the beauty of the sculpture. The human head means the object protected in the tomb is the big shots. The lion is the traditional animal in Greek ancient time. So it is easy to understand why the body is the lion. Lion means bravery and force. The designer used this animal to decorate the sculpture to convey the meaning that lion could protect the tomb and no one could enter into it. And meanwhile, the lion has the meaning that the big shot in the tomb has the brave characteristic. These are the meanings conveyed by the appearance of the sculpture. Looking at the sculpture itself, we may find how great the sculpting techniques are. We cannot imagine how the designers used his hands and tools to engrave such great works. The stripe of the wings are clear and seem so beautiful which are just like those on the angel’s body. If the sculpture was unbroken, it would be much nicer. Apart from the stripe of the wings, the hair is so vivid. The designer used his tools to show the real hair style at times. It reflects the fashion trend at times. From the remaining material, we can find the golden hair to some degree. How beautiful it is!
The Sphinxes represents the great sculpture skills at that time. And meanwhile it is the mixture of wisdom and innovation. The people at that time dared to imagine and create what they wanted. This makes the sculpture look so imaginable and beautiful.
After appreciating the first picture, let us look at the second picture “Amphora”. At first sight of the black amphora, we can see two soldiers who hold swears and shields fight with each other. The color of the soldiers’ clothes has some differences. The equipment which the soldiers uses also is different to some degree. According to some historical records, the equipment is expensive and the workers should pay more time to produce it. It not only represents a distinction of citizenship, but also represents a symbol of wealth and social status. So we can think of a saying “Repel the enemy on the momentum”, which shows a military idea. Besides, the figures of the soldiers inherits the Greek military tradition. The designer used tools to describe the strong muscles which showed how the powerful they were. The color on the amphora is a mixture of black and brown, which makes the amphora have a sense of heavy history. Apart from the content on the amphora, we can appreciate the style of the amphora. It seems very useful and practical for the users. It inherits the traditional design in the field of amphora. We can imagine that the people at that time used it to contain food or water. The reason why the content on the amphora is about military may be that Greece loves to fight for honor and fame. So all in all, the amphora has the practical value and artistic appreciation value.
The Amphora is also the mixture of wisdom and innovation. It shows the social events and phenomenon at that times. Apart from the artistic appreciation value, it also has the practical value.
Comparing the two pictures, we can find the two artistic works represent two fields. One is sculpture and the other is chinaware. Some similar points on them will be analyzed and the different ideas will be given as well. Firstly, we can find some similar points on them. The two artworks were made by hands with much time and attention. They both look so delicate, which reflect the tradition at their times. They are the mixture of wisdom and traditional crafts. However, the Sphinxes is from the tomb, which makes us know its application. The designer uses tool to engrave this artworks without other crafts. It represents bravery and the characteristics of the big shots. While the amphora can be as the artwork in the house. Besides, it can be also as a tool to contain food or water. The designer should fire it in the kiln which makes the craft more difficult especially the control on the duration and degree of heating.
To sum up, the two artworks reflect the history at times. They have appreciation values. By appreciating them, we can explore the backgrounds of the artworks. Besides, we can also find more interesting stories behind the artworks. They are the mixture of wisdom and innovation, which should be protected by us forever.
