大卫•米切尔是欧美文坛公认的新锐小说家，其第三部小说《云图》出版后引起了社会各界的广泛关注和高度评价，并且获得了英国国家图书奖最佳小说奖以及理查与茱蒂读书俱乐部年度选书等奖项。该小说将六个故事完美地交织在一起，共同反映了反资本主义和反乌托邦的主题思想。无论在思想深度上、舆论作用力上还是在艺术表现力上，《云图》都显示出其无可比拟的价值，英语论文范文，值得深入探讨。

Abstract
David Mitchell is a famous contemporary British novelist. Cloud Atlas is his third and the most famous novel that won the British Book Awards Literary Fiction Award and the Richard & Judy Book of the Year Award, and other awards. It received positive reviews from most critics who appreciated that the novel managed to successfully interweave its six stories and reflected a profound subject. It is worthy of further study, either of its artistic expression or profound meaning.
This thesis bases on writing techniques and rhetorical methods for analyzing the novel. We can find deep meanings under superficial world through profound analysis of symbolic images. Different kinds of symbolic images can be found everywhere in the novel, playing important roles on expressing the profound thoughts and theme. The purpose of this thesis to analysis the obscure symbolic images and explore the theme, and then draw a conclusion about writing characteristics and practical significance.
This thesis tries to make an analysis of the use of symbolic images in the novel. Part one is the introduction that mainly introduces the thesis, research method, research significance and text structure of this paper. Part two is the literature review of Cloud Atlas, including domestic and foreign research results. Part three seeks to explore the interpretation and definition of symbol, which is necessary for elaborating the novel’s symbolic expressions. Part four makes an analysis on the symbolic images in Cloud Atlas. The real meaning of each symbolic image can be presented obviously through a close examination. In Part five, this thesis tries to explore the theme interpretations with reference to symbolic images in the novel. And the last part is the conclusion, Mitchell weaves these images into the novel skillfully, so they make a great contribution to the dominant theme of the novel.
