Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Introduction

Thatis why it is called “world language”. However, mastering a foreign language likeEnglish is still a tough work for a lot of Chinese English leaners. Listening,speaking, reading and writing are considered as the four basic skills in learning alanguage. Among these four skills,writing plays an indispensable role, sincewriting is a productive process in which it can help learners get to know the correctuse of words, phrases and grammar, and help to express their ideas in a clear andsystemic way. Greenia (1992: 54) points out that second language writing canfacilitate language learning and promote students' thinking ability. Many scholarsalso argue that written mode is as important as the spoken one in the process oflanguage learning.Owing to its importance, writing is considered as one of the basic skills thatstudents are supposed to master in the process of their college English learning, it isalso included in the college English syllabus. The syllabus made by theEducational Commission of China reqires that college non-English majors shouldproduce writings which are complete in content, appropriate in diction and coherentin discourse after two-year learning. Writing also plays an essential part in manystandardized English tests, such as College English Test (CET), Test for EnglishMajors (TEM). Hence, how to write well is always the focus in the field of Englishlearning and teaching.
This thesis mainly focuses on the application of Theme and ThematicProgression (TP) Patterns in college English writing teaching, through the study ofsample writings of CET-4. It is expected that the present study will provide furtherinsight into the ordering of information in a text and be of value in assisting teachersand students. The overall objective of this research is to explore and apply a newmeans to assist students with their English writing, to help English teachers with their writing teaching.


1.2 Rationale for the research
英语写作教学一直是大学英语教学中最薄弱的环节。传统的写作教学拓展主题句和词汇衔接,即连词,副词等,这亘古不变的语言系统的内部结构的深度去提供一些手段。其结果是,许多学生都辛劳多年,虽然他们可能不会写文章圣维特连贯的语义含义,清晰且易于理解的表达。外语写作的理论探讨开始于20世纪50年代,那么,它没有形成一个所谓的科学体系。直到20世纪80年代至20世纪90年代国际第二语言写作教学的蓬勃发展。但中国外语探讨人员当时不那么热衷学习第二语言写作。其原因是多方面的:English writing teaching has been the weakest link for the college Englishteaching. Traditional writing teaching is about expanding the topic sentences andoffering some means of lexical cohesion, i.e., conjunctions, adverbs, etc, which doesnot go to the depth of the internal structure of language system. The consequenceis that many students have labored for years, though, they could not write articles v ithcoherent semantic meanings, clear and well-understood expressions.The theoretical study of foreign language writing began in the 1950s,then, it didnot form a so called scientific system.
