Abstract:
Culture-loaded words are strongly nation and culture specific. Proper translation of these words plays an important role in intercultural communication between different languages. This paper collected, categorized and summarized the English translation of all the culture-loaded Chinese words in Moment in Peking by Lin Yutang. The author found that Yin mainly adopted foreignizing translation of those Chinese words with different methods for different types of culture-loaded words, which agreed with his motivation of creating this masterpiece in English. However, the author believes that for some words, domesticating translation seems more proper.
Key Words: Moment in Peking; culture-loaded words; foreignization
1.1 About Lin Yutang
Lin Yutang, a famous translator, erudite writer and superexcellent linguist in China, was born in 1895, in a small county of Fujian Province. During his early years, he received nothing but western education in missionary schools and later in Shanghai St. John’s University which laid a solid foundation for his profound mastery of English. After graduation, Lin Yutang accepted a teaching post at Qinghua College where the excellent Chinese historical heritage spurred him onto reviewing the traditional culture in every possible way he could find. Later he went to study abroad, and got his master’s degree in modern languages at Harvard, and in 1923 he received his Ph. D in philology from Leipzig University.
If ever a person dedicated his life to developing an understanding between East and West, it is Lin Yutang. The New York Times said at the time of his death, “Lin Yutang had no peer as an interpreter to Western minds of the customs, aspirations, fears and thought of his people.” In an editorial, the China Times of Taiwan said, “Dr. Lin is the scholar and writer who possibly made the greatest contribution in promoting Chinese culture internationally in the recent 100 years. For some in the West who were not well-informed, they heard about Lin Yutang before they heard about China, and heard about China before they heard about the glory of Chinese civilization.”
His masterpiece, Moment in Peking, presents a perfect picture of Chinese culture. Lin Yutang employed the language of the occidental to introduce the culture of the oriental, which displays an excellent way of how to preserve the original cultural flavor of the Chinese language in C-E translation.
