1. Introduction
The Chinese title for this book is "Fousheng Liuchi" which refers to a passage in Li Po's poem, "Our floating life is like a dream; how often can one enjoy oneself?"(浮生若梦,为欢几何?).The book, masterpiece of Shen Fu(1763-1822) in Qing Dynasty, is an autobiography essay, covering many aspects of life, such as wedded bliss, little pleasures of life and sorrow in life which embodies author's unique attitudes and values towards life. As the name of the book says, it should contain six chapters but the last two were missing and we only know that the fifth chapter recorded his experiences in Formosa while the sixth chapter reflected the author's emotions on the way of life. The extant version was first published in 1877 with only four chapters. Lin Yutang(1895-1976), a world-famous scholar, writer and translator, firstly translated the book with the name "Six Chapters of a Floating Life " in 1935. Shirley M. Black, an English sinologist, also translated the book under the title "Chapters from a Floating Life: Autobiography of a Chinese Artist" in 1960. Different from Lin's version, hers mainly focused on the first and third chapter, and a few parts from the fourth chapter in the source text. Furthermore, in order to make time order clear to western readers, she rearranged the chapters into "a less confusing annalistic order". Besides, another characteristic of her translation is that she selected the illustrations from the seventeenth century paintings .
