摘 要
威廉.福克纳是二十世纪最负盛名的小说家之一，他的长篇小说为世人所称道，而他在短篇小说创作上也展示了过人的功力。本文将对比略论福克纳短篇小说中的两位主人公的性格，并揭示作用其性格的深层次原因。
本文所略论的人物分别是米妮.库珀（《干旱的九月》的女主人公）和艾米丽（《献给艾米丽的一朵玫瑰花》的女主人公），她们虽然家庭背景不同，但身为南方淑女，都过着悲惨的生活，英语论文，都直接或者间接充当杀人凶手的角色。
许多探讨者从女性主义视角来略论人物的性格及命运，也有学者从人物自身经历角度来略论其对命运的作用，本文则从社会环境角度剖析其对主人公性格命运的作用，本探讨对社会环境的界定包括三个维度:宗教、种族和社会习俗。通过对这三个维度的深度剖析，来深入探究其对任务性格的作用。

Abstract
William Faulkner is one of the most famous novelists in the 20th century, his novel is of great importance in the literary world, and he also shows excellent skills in the creation of short stories. This article tries to make a comparison between two heroines of Faulkner’s short stories, and reveals real reasons of the distortion of personalities.
This article analyses two characters, they are Minnie Cooper from Dry September and Emily from A Rose for Emily. They have different family background, but as southern ladies, both of them lead a miserable life, and they directly or indirectly played the role of the murderer.
Many researchers analyze the character and their destiny from the feminist perspective, while some study it from the heroines’ own life experience, and they believe that it is the experience that have a great influence on their fate. This article tries to analyze the impact of social environment on the fate of the heroines, and in this study, the definition of social environment includes three dimensions: religion, race, and traditional custom. By examining these three dimensions deeply, the effects they have on characters would be presented.
