摘要

Abstract

In his fictional world, Faulkner created a quantity of Southern women characters who come from different classes and races and who possess distinctive personalities. With the flourishing of feminist literature criticism in the 1960s, female characters in Faulkner’s fiction and the author’s own attitudes towards women became the focus of critics and the great controversial debates were produced. Some critics, who emphasized the evil aspects of his women characters, accused Faulkner as a male chauvinist and even a misogynist. Other critics asserted that women in Faulkner’s works were full of individuality, creativity and rebellious spirit. They believed that Faulkner had expressed genuine sympathy and admiration for Southern women. Based on the feminist literary criticism and Faulkner’s literature criticism, the thesis intends to reinterpret Faulkner’s views on women through analyses of the representative female characters in A Rose for Emily and That Evening Sun.
Firstly, the present author gives a brief introduction to William Faulkner and the previous studies on Faulkner’s views women as well as the theoretic basis of the thesis. Secondly, the thesis makes through analyses of the representative female characters---Emily and Nancy and Faulkner’s writing skills on how he shaped the female characters in his fictions and further explores Faulkner’s attitudes towards women.
