Abstract

In order to have a better understanding of the connotation and essence of the literary work Gone with the Wind and its author Margaret Mitchell's writing style and her life experience, this thesis compares the two protagonists Ashley and Rhett's characteristics and their attitudes towards the actress Scarlett in Gone with the Wind, aiming to analyze the view towards marriage of the two protagonists. This thesis refers to some other early critics and researchers’ achievements of study and research on Gone with the Wind, such as the feminist interpretation in Gone with the Wind; the changes of the prewar and postwar of the southern society; the awakening of female consciousness of the United States of America after World War II and etc.. But among these survey findings, so far no one has studied the two heroes on the aspect of their views towards love and marriage. By comparing the two heroes of their concepts of love and marriage, we can more clearly understand the two protagonists’ characters as well.

Key words: view towards marriage; feminist interpretation; changes of the southern society

1 Introduction
This thesis mainly focuses on the different attitudes towards marriage between Ashley and Rhett in Gone with the Wind. By studying and comparing their natures and the heroine’s attitude, we draw the conclusion Rhett was the man who loved Scarlett most while Ashley on one hand was loyal to his wife, on the other hand could not resist Scarlett’s blind strong love. The whole love story could be described as a tragedy.
1.1 The purpose and significance of this thesis
Gone with the Wind is as controversial a novel as it is magnificent. Even during its publication year, when Margaret Mitchell won a Pulitzer Prize, the book attracted a glittering array of literary critics, including Malcolm Cowley and Bernard De Voto, who attacked the artistry and politics of the novel with a ferocity that continues to this day. The subject of marriage has been involved many times in Gone with the Wind. The characters’ marriages enrich the story to some extent. Different views on marriage reveal different personalities and display the characters’ different class natures as well.
