However, there are few scholars who have studied therelationship between the passive concept and the passive sentence inEnglish. To solve this problem, this thesis aims to provide acomprehensive and systematic exploration for this relationship.

The objective world we live in is made up of a variety of things.Unfortunately, it is difficult to cognize the simple and complicated thingsone by one. Fortunately, people have the ability of classifying them andform all kinds of categories. Then, people begin to categorize these thingsinto different categories and conceptualize them and obtain differentconcepts according to different standards. Each concept reflects theessence of one particular thing. The passive concept is one of thesedifferent concepts. It emphasizes the role of the patient in the passiveevent consisting of the agent, the act and the patient.Cognitive linguistics proposes that the linguistic structures reflectthe concepts and the conceptual structures which are formed on people'srecognition of the objective world. That's to say, the linguistic structuresare closely related to people's experiential structures; the experientialstructures are mapped onto the linguistic structures and they haveiconicity (Zhao Yanfang 2017). According to this view, the passivesentence in English has a close relationship with the passive concept.Therefore, this thesis intends to answer the questions listed below.(1) What is the passive concept?(2) How is the passive concept generated and expanded?(3) What is the passive sentence in English?(4) How is the passive sentence in English generated and expanded?The significance of this thesis mainly lies in the following aspects.Firstly, it will further prove the explanatory capabilities of theoriesby combining the passive phenomenon with the corresponding linguistictheories.Secondly, it will prove that the passive sentence in English does notderive from the corresponding active sentence in English by the analyzingthe relationship between the passive concept and the passive sentence inEnglish.Thirdly, it will be of some help to the learners of English in learningand using the passive sentence in English.Fourthly, it will provide reference for English-Chinese translation ofthe passive sentence in English.Finally, it is beneficial to the exploration of the relationship betweenthe concepts and the production of different human languages.
