2. 复合句
所谓复合句是指主句的句子成分是由分句承担的,航海英语中有一些非常复杂的复合句,主要出现在海事法规中。众所周知,法学文本讲究语言精密,没有丝毫漏洞,因此这类句子多为多重复合句,即由多个分句作主句的句子成分。翻开“1972年国际海上避碰规则”英文版,这类句子随处可见。例如:①Whenever the Government concerned shall have determined that a vessel of special construction or purpose cannot comply fully with the provisions of anyof these Rules with respect to the number, position,range or arc of visibility of lights or shapes, as well as to the disposition and characteristics of sound-signaling appliances, such vessel shall comply with such other provisions in regard to the number, position, range or arc of visibility of lights or shapes, as well as to the disposition and characteristics of sound-signaling appliances.②as her Government shall have determined to be the closest possible compliance with these Rules in respect of that vessel.要全面理解这个句子的意思,一定要先弄清它的结构以及相应的联系。(1)这句话的主干形式为“主语/谓语/宾语”,主语是“such vessel”,谓语是“shall comply with”,宾语为“such other provisions”(见句中带下划线部分)。
