The purpose of this study is to examine how discourse functions of English restrictive relative clauses are related to their occurrences in discourse structures in written argumentation and expositions. Our analysis is on the basis of the aspects of information flow: grounding and information status of head NPs and NPs within English restrictive relatives. In particular, we want to investigate how ‘discourse structure’ may influence the functions of English restrictive relative clauses of English in written texts. It is hoped that the findings will offer some insights about the discourse functions of English restrictive relative clauses in written discourse. Furthermore, we investigate the occurrences and discourse functions of English restrictive relative clauses in the expository and argumentative compositions by Chinese college students. This aims to discover how the college students use English restrictive relative clauses in their writings. The purpose of the comparison is to find out the difference between them and unnoticed discourse functions of English restrictive relative clauses in college students’ compositions. Finally, based on our findings, we offer some pedagogical implications for teaching English restrictive relative clauses to hope that students can learn the specific language knowledge possessed.

Chapter One of this thesis is introduction. In what follows, Chapter Two reviews related literatures. Major studies to be discussed include the aspects of information flow like grounding and information status of NPs. Besides, studies on syntactic-semantic aspects of English restrictive relative clauses are also introduced. In particular, discourse structure of written discourse is included to investigate the occurrences and discourse functions of English restrictive relative clauses.

        Chapter Three examines the occurrences and discourse functions of English restrictive relative clauses in literature analysis. 

Chapter Four investigates how the Chinese college students make use of English restrictive relative clauses in their expository and argumentative compositions. A crude quantitative analysis is also conducted to find out the occurrences and discourse functions of English restrictive relative clauses in the students' compositions. Then, Chapter Five compare the strategies used by native English speakers with those by Chinese students to uncover the differences between them. And we point out the discourse functions of English restrictive relative clauses that go unnoticed by the college students.
