Abstract
The Lord of the Rings trilogy, an epic fantasy, was written by J.R.R.Tolkien, linguist and Professor of philology and Anglo-Saxon language of Oxford. At present, most studies on The Lord of the Rings stands at the angle of literature, discussing and analyzing Tolkien and the original work. Seldom people see from the side of translation, let alone the translation of the wonderful poems throughout the story. There are various poems in the trilogy, apart from appreciating them on linguistics, readers also get plenty of information about the background and characteristics for each race. Thus, the quality of translations is very important for readers to fully understand the story.
This thesis includes four parts. In the first part, the author gives the brief introduction of The Lord of the Rings, including the story content, status, influence and the information of the current translations. In the second part, the thesis talks about two core conceptions of Reception Aesthetic theory- gap and horizon of expectation, then illustrates the enlightenment of Reception Aesthetics on literary translation. In the third part, the thesis starts by talking about the various kinds of poems in the trilogy, which pays attention to the features of different races as well as their poems. Then the thesis selects three typical poems doing analysis and evaluation on the two translations (Yilin Press’s version and Taiwanese scholar Zhu Xueheng’s version) bases on Reception Aesthetics theory. Yilin Press sets the readership ordinary teenagers and infers that their horizon of expectation is the style of children’s book. Thus, Yilin Press focuses on poems’ readability and rhythmic beauty, and there is little transformation on the overall style. Zhu Xueheng sets the readership fans of fantasy literature and infers that their horizon of expectation is seriously epic style. Thus, Zhu’s translation pays more attention to the accuracy of content and the overall style which can express different races’ features. In the fourth part, the author makes a summary of the whole thesis. The
Advantages and disadvantages of Yilin’s and Zhu’s versions are concluded respectively. The author also raises three analysis aspects for evaluating the poems of same type.
