11 Research backgrounds
Because of the small amount of words, it seems that it will be easy for learners to use English article, but as a matter of fact, the usage is quite complicated involved by semantic concept relating to existential and referential meanings, and discourse concept relating to cohesion and situation,as well as grammar concept relevant with countability and singular and plural (Zhou Baoguo2017: Preface 1). Distinguishing between these blending concepts has given extreme cognitive burden to those learners who are learning English as a Foreign Language (EFLs),what’s more, EFLs, being influenced by their mother tongues and interlanguage, would continuously change their hypothesis of article usage at different learning stages while theyare learning English articles. As stated by Peter Master (1990) “the English article system isone of the most difficult aspects of English grammar for nonnative speakers and one of the latest to be fully acquired.” As a result, based on the complicated usage and influence by learners’ mother tongues, there are also some scholars conservatively believed that, it is impossible for EFLs to completely acquire all the correct usage of English articles. Such phenomenon has drawn scholars and researchers’ attention to make detailed study on English articles continually, and keep their interest and passion on English articles study for a longtime.

1.1.1 Linguistics and methodology backgrounds
English articles are mainly used before nouns, so it is necessary to dig into the basicproperties of nouns before discussing characteristics of English articles. Nouns in anylanguage have two types of meaning, one is denotative and the other is referential. Only thereferential meaning of nouns is related to the articles use. There are four kinds of Reference ofnouns, including definite, indefinite, non-referential, and generic. Based on relativedescriptive and pedagogical grammar (Zhou Baoguo 2017: 15), the available collocations of articles and nouns about those four kinds of reference are shown as following tables: From the above four tables, each referential type can be expressed by no less than onepattern, and from the aspect of collocation of articles and nouns, one pattern can be used toexpress various reference. Such phenomenon shows one important feature of English articleswhich is the relationship between the form of articles and their functions is not one to one,neither one to many, but many to many. Specific speaking, one pattern can not only indicateone function; vice versa, one function can be expressed by more than one pattern. It’s known that, it could be easy to acquire the linguistic structures or features in which one pattern canonly express one function and vice versa, for its low degree of acquisition difficulty andcognitive burden. As for those one to many structures and features, the acquisition will bemore difficult, and the cognitive burden will be heavier, but for such many to many grammaritems like English articles, it ,英语论文英语论文范文
