It doesn't have long history to educate Korean language to foreigners. In fact, it is necessary to study diversely and systematically in many parts of Korean language education. These days, the trend is to sublate the teaching and learning method of the past centered in grammar and to make efforts to search for the more effective learning method.
Thus, this study inquired an integral educational plan to put together communication, culture and literature excluding the class centered in communication to read, write, speak and listen to the literary works. For a plan of guiding this, we chose the modern novels, 'Obaltan' by Beomseon Lee and 'A puppy's dung' by Jeongsaeng by Kweon and presented a proper teaching plan. We had a purpose that by using the novels as language and culture materials, the learners would have interest and concern in Korean novels through understanding the contents of novels. Additionally, there is another goal that they can understand Korean modern culture providing to them the opportunity of enhancing the ability to appreciate the literary works.
The Korean language education in Korea is mainly carried out in universities and most of the education in the educational institutes using the literary works is carried out to the high-leveled learners. Then, how is the education using the literary works to the middle-leveled learners carried out? For this, we limited the learners to the adults who finished more than the university education. With the standard of the learners with the third or fourth grade of Korean Proficiency Test;KPT), we viewed the possibility and the direction of education using literary works.
As the foreigner learners have already read many high-leveled literatures in their mother tongues, their literary abilities are enough. The fact that one's language level is low doesn't mean that he/she can't understand the literatures. Therefore, the language ability level of the foreigner learners can't be estimated with their the literary ability. Thus, to the learners who has enough literary abilities in mother tongues, the education to improve the understanding ability of the literary works as well as the ability of language and culture is needed.
For this, to make them read the literature works using the picture materials helps them figure out the overall flow and contents. On the basis of it, selecting and learning the sentences, phrases and cultural elements that are the core of the works is also helpful.
This study set up the six standards of selecting the literary works.
First, the most important thing is to select the literary text which satisfies the interest and demand of the foreigner learners. Second, it should be modern ones and have rich cultural and literary values. Third, it should not be too long to teach in the class. Fourth, it should treat the universal subjects transcending time and space. It is good to select the literary works that have the subjects which whoever lives in the different cultures can understand easily and sympathize. Fifth, it should be selected considering the language ability of the foreigner learners. Sixth, it is much better that it is a work for which the picture materials can be used.
By these standards, we tried to seek for a detailed teaching plan of 'Obaltan' 'A puppy's dung'. For 'Obaltan', we presented the following things in detail; catching its meaning, understanding the basic contents, understanding the social and cultural background, understanding the characters' behaviors, understanding the characters' personalities and conflicts, figuring out the main subject and understanding Koreans' love of families and viewpoints. Dividing it into for five classes and providing a main learning subject for each class, we presented a way to lead the class centered of the subject. Additionally, by presenting the important words and grammars for each class, we tried to get the learners to learn the difficult words through direct activities. For the fifth class, we intended the learners to understand and approach the culture of Korea synthetically through Koreans' viewpoints, their views for family, various appreciation and comparison with their own culture.
For 'A puppy's dung', we presented a way to teach it dividing into three classes with understanding the basic contents, understanding new words and expressions, talking one's own viewpoints and thought freely. We tried to get the learners to learn the important words and grammars in the work through direct activities. For a final class, we intended the learners to present free appreciation for the work and to held in common their thoughts.
This study presented a possibility of extending the range of understanding the works, understanding the culture included in the texts and making the learners acquire the difficult words and grammars by teaching the novels to the learners of the middle level
However, many tasks desire to be studied continuously such as the lists of the novel texts for the middle-leveled learners, the development of the teaching materials, the study of teaching and learning method and various learning materials. For this reason, the efforts to use the novel works with effectiveness, value and usefulness should be made in a class to educate the Korean language to the foreigner learners.
