Abstract Since a local self-governing system has been implemented in South Korea, Regional identity has emerged as a major interest of Society. This study aims to examine the process that regional identity is established by looking into the case of Yecheon-gun county that forms and constructs community identity making a bow a symbol of Yecheon-gun county. In Yecheon-gun county emerging as the home of a bow, bow-making was introduced in the middle and late of Joseon dynasty. Bow-making was established as tradition of Yecheon-gun county by efforts of local influential persons and local worthies at the end of the Joseon dynasty(The time of enlightenment) and the Japanese colonial period. Regional identity of Yecheon through representation of bow has been established by modern era. In Yecheon-gun county of the contemporary ages, Yecheon's regional identity representation of bow came to the fore as bows were produced of Yecheon bowyers(Gungjang) and archery activities of archers of traditional Korean archery. Bow and Arrow makers(Gungsijang) of Yecheon-gun county were designated as Important Intangible Cultural Property since 1970s which contributed to establishment of Yecheon's Regional identity as ‘The Home of a Bow’. Since 1990s, a local self-governing system has been implemented in South Korea, Since 2013, Yecheon-gun county has held bow and arrow related local festivals which helped enhance Yecheon's regional identity as ‘The Home of a Bow’ and express Yecheon's regional identity representation of bow. In Yecheon-gun county, Archery and tradition Korean archery related sports facilities, museum and exhibit halls are operated. Recently, Yecheon-gun county has tried to establish World Bow Organization and has promoted to set up a bow theme park. Besides, Yecheon-gun county has tried to a bow and arrow relate culture listed as World Heritage and by the USCO in order to enhance Yecheon's Regional identity as ‘The Home of a Bow’. Lastly, Various agents have been involved in establishing Yecheon's regional identity through representation of bow. The agents relating to Yecheon's bow are classified into Internal agents that include Yecheon bowyers(Gungjang), Yecheon archers of traditional Korean archery, and Yecheon-gun county office and External agent that include central government and professors.
