Multicultural sensibility is a concept that indicates the affective response aroused when witnessing the ‘others’ with multicultural backgrounds. The multicultural sensibility education takes charge of the aspect of affect in multicultural education. This study aimed to propose the necessity and concept of multicultural sensibility in the viewpoint of literary education, and suggest the educational direction that is able to be realized in modern poetry education. One of the affective characteristics of the students in secondary education is to have the abundant and acute sensibility. Such student’s emotion or attitude has a huge influence on their behavior since immediate action to the certain phenomenon tends to be influenced by feeling rather than knowledge. However, multicultural education so far has been limited to the people with multicultural backgrounds as a subject, or it has been done in a way that emphasizes the aspect of cognition of students focusing on the knowledge. So, the direction of education in the future needs to be transformed into the dimension of affective education with the attitude to give a help to others positively and actively. The Korean language subject is a curriculum that is able to express and explain the emotion felt by learners. Among them, literary subject is a curriculum in which sensitivity is greatly applied when appreciating poetry. This is because the learner has to keenly catch the poetic diction and to apprehend the meaning of the poetry diction in the poem. Modern poetry education can enhance the multicultural sensibility of learners by transforming the sensitivity applied when appreciating the poem into the direction aiming at multiculture and others. When examining the appling process of the multicultural sensibility and each stage of the process according to ‘ethical return process’ of E. Levinas, sensitivity, empathy, ethical subjectivity can be arranged as the detailed factors of the multicultural sensibility. The students can discover the others in a complex world through sensitivity and understand the situation of others through empathy, and furthermore, accept others as a community by giving hospitality to others with an ethical subjectivity. The text for the modern poetry education should be selected considering the multicultural sensibility and the degree of the multicultural sensibility equipped by the learners. However, present modern poetry education has a limit in regard to multiculture since the poem limited to the particular poet is included in the text book. In order for education that takes into account various aspects of the multicultural sensibility and various levels of students, more various contents of education should be arranged. This study has significance for the fact that it apprehends such problem that multicultural education has in education, and grow up students into the ethical ‘subject’ with ethicality by suggesting the alternative for this through the concept of multicultural sensibility.
