Purpose: The aim of this study was to construct a model of cultural competence in nursing students and to verify the goodness of fitness of the model. The hypothetical model consisted of 7 different variables: multicultural experience, emotional intelligence, critical thinking disposition, intercultural anxiety, multicultural communication, self­efficacy, and cultural competency. Methods: The subjects were 418 nursing students selected from 8 universities located in D city and G province. Collected data were analyzed with the IBM SPSS Statistics 19.0 and AMOS 20.0 programs. Results: The modified model generally showed more than recommended level of model fit indices and acceptable explanation. The predicting variables explained 50% of cultural competence. Also, the 10 path modified model was statistically significant in all aspects. The result of the study suggests that communication skill, multicultural experience, and self­efficacy were direct relevant valuables of cultural competence in nursing students. Multicultural experience had a direct or indirect effects on not only direct effects on cultural competence but also on communication ability, self­efficacy, and intercultural anxiety, which were endogenous variables set in this study. On the other hand, emotional intelligence, intercultural anxiety, and critical thinking disposition were the factors indirectly affecting cultural competence. Conclusion: In order to enhance the cultural competence of nursing students, it can be seen that the more experience of multiculture is, the more effective it is. The cultural competence programs for nursing students should include enhancing self-efficacy and communication ability developing emotional intelligence and critical thinking disposition, and reducing interculture anxiety through various experiences of suburban activities.
