Due to the increase in the number of foreign residents in Korea, Korea is experiencing a rapid change to a multicultural age in a short time. Health professionals providing health care services are becoming more and more aware of the need to cultivate intercultural communication skills in order to provide optimal cultural nursing care for people with diverse cultural backgrounds. Therefore, this study was conducted to provide nursing university students who will be working as future nurses in order to understand their multicultural awareness and communication ability between cultures and to provide basic data for redevelopment during education. This study used 207 self - questionnaires for 3rd and 4th grade nursing college students and collected data from October to November 2015. Multicultural perception was measured using the multicultural perception tool developed by Kim (2011), and intercultural communication was measured using the intercultural communication ability tool developed by Lee (2011). Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS WIN 18.0 statistical program using real numbers and percentages, means and standard deviations, mean scores and standard deviations, minimum and maximum values, t-test, ANOVA and Scheffé test, and Pearson's correlation coefficients The results of this study were as follows. 1. The average level of multicultural awareness was 71.00 ± 10.88 and the average score was 3.57 ± 0.54. The average level of cultural communication ability was 140.19 ± 21.02 and the mean score was 3.50 ± 0.53. 2. There was a statistically significant difference in multicultural perception according to the degree of interest in multicultural education among the general characteristics of the subjects (F = 8.304, p <.001). The level of communication ability between cultures was higher when they had foreign friends (t = 2.414, p = .017), when they had experience of multicultural subjects (t = 2.273, p = .024) (F = 8.210, p <.001), respectively. 3. There was a strong positive correlation (r = .70, p <.001) between the level of multicultural awareness of the subjects and the level of communication ability between cultures. In conclusion, based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop an educational strategy to encourage nursing students to have a positive perception of multiculturalism in order to cultivate intercultural communication skills Key words: Multicultural awareness, Intercultural communication ability, Nursing students
