This study aimed at verifying the effect of hydroxypropyl cellulose(HPC) treatment on polyethylene glycol(PEG)-treated waterlogged wood for surface stabilizing. HPC intended to determine suppression of weight and dimensional change by moisture absorption.
Part of Wan-do wreck was utilized as the testing wood specimen. Wood specimens were dried by vacuum freezing dryer after PEG immersion. And then, HPC was spreaded on the wood surface. HPCs used were classified with molecular weight and concentration. Specimens without deterioration were kept in temperature 25℃ and humidity 55%, according to the museum exhibition environmental condition. And specimens with deterioration were kept in temperature 40℃ and humidity 85% for 2 weeks assuming hot and humid environment.
This research measured exterior observation and microscope observation, color difference change, weight change rate, and dimensional change rate. And effect of HPC was verified through variance analysis (ANOVA) and least significant difference test(LSD).
HPC formed thin layer on the surface of wood specimen, and blocked the pore of tracheid and the gap between the crack. Specimens without deterioration showed no invisible change except HPC 1,000,000 treatment group. Whitening was appeared at the sound surface of HPC 1,000,000 treated wood.
Specimens with deterioration showed a little color difference change by external moisture adsorption. Thin layer of HPC on the surface of wood specimen was maintained after the deterioration, and this HPC layer significantly suppressed the weight and dimensional change by moisture adsorption.
