The road names which are considered as kind of a place name will not be changed or eliminated if once it's given. Therefore, these names need to be examined if they has some morphologic problems or if they can be easily recognized by people. For that reasons, this study intends to understand the characteristics of the road names in Daejeon.
The road names can be divided front parts and back parts like the place names. I concentrate on morphologic and semantic studies of the front parts since the back parts show regular patterns. For the morphologic study, we analyze the linguistic appearances and the number of syllables from the road names. For the semantic study, we categorize the road names by relativeness.
The words using for the back parts of the road names in Daejeon are four words: 대로, 로, 길, 고샅. Among these four words, the word 로 and 길 are the most productive. If we consider that overlapped road names as one name, the total number of the road names in Daejeon is 274.
The linguistic appearances of the road names show 42 of native Korean words(15%), 201 of Sino-Korean words(73%), 30 of hybridism words(11%) and 2 of loan words(1%). When we analyze the number of syllables from the road names in Daejeon, there are 190 of disyllabic road names(69%), 67 of trisyllabic road names(24%), 16 of quadrisyllabic road names(6%) and a pentasyllabic road name(1%). For categorization by relativeness, we set five groups: Existing name, Building, Nature, Concept and Regional character, and categorize by these groups.
However, we put sub-groups for Existing name because the road names related existing name is 80% of all the road names. The sub-gruops for Existing name are Name of legal-administrative zone, New name of a place, Old name of a place, Name of a road and Location.
This research shows that the road names in Daejeon have many Sino-Korean words, and most of the road names consist of short- disyllabic words, and many road names apply their existing name. The road names are easy to remember and recognize since they mostly use disyllabic words and their existing name.
Nevertheless, it's very difficult to know the location and feature of the road from the road name except when the road names use their existing name. One of the future study will be defining further problems of the road names, and find out solutions for these problems.
