This focus on attitudes of acceptance and forms on ‘loan words’ commonly used in both Korea and China, which is affiliated with subcategory of words, and considers comparing how the meanings of the original language has changed during its adoption process. Also this examines the impacts that were held while adopting foreign language to words system of native language. Through these comparisons, this study is purposed to facilitate the learning of Korean loan words efficiently, through identifying the similarities and differences in Korean and Chinese loan words by a Chinese learner who learned Korean language.
Korean language adopted other countries language from Chinese characters to Japanese language, English, and etc. These words are called ‘loan words’, as they were well settled into Korean language, and these loan words are read and transcribed in Korean method under its phoneticism. For this reason, although loan words are a part of Korean language, foreign Korean language learners find it difficult to master and are unfamiliar with loan words. A different transcription method used for Korean loan words poses difficulty for them to decipher the meaning of a given word, even if the learner is familiar with the foreign word at hand. Therefore, it is necessary to look into the causes and methods on adopting loan words of both countries and consider loan words category by dividing into morphological and sematic sides. If the learners are enabled to properly understand and use both countries loan words, learners can facilitate the learning of Korean loan words efficiently by utilizing their prior knowledge of English as well as decrease the level of anxiety associated with learning a language.
Before beginning the main discussion, in part 2, loan words are defined in terms of separating Korean words system into native tongue, chinese characters, and loan words. By arranging advanced research about loan words, I examined the difference between loan words and foreign languages loan words and adopted words, loan words and naturalized words. While arranging the concept of Chinese loan words, I clarified the definition of Japanese loan words and its dialects, and loan words to enumerate the unique characteristics of Chinese loan words. In the end of part 2, I examined the different concept between Korean and Chinese loan words.
In part 3, the structure of Korean and Chinese loan words are mainly covered. Similar with Chinese language, in Korean language’s adopting method on loan words, it is largely divided in two ways, range and liberal translation; Korean language prefers using range method while Chinese language prefers more on liberal translation. I analyzed by dividing Korean and Chinese range translation loan words into the original language forms, abbreviation forms, compound forms, and derivation forms, and arranged their differences. I also examined the difference between Korean and Chinese liberal translation loan words by arranging their own characteristics. In attitudes toward loan words adoption, I arranged the process of adopting large amounts of foreign language time-periodically. I also analyzed the common and different impacts of foreign language on Korean and Chinese language.
In part 4, by considering semantic characteristics of loan words, I verified the fact that loan words used for expressing a new culture, the products of civilization and concept that were absorbed during the contact with foreign countries, undergoes the change of meaning process constantly while assimilating to its native language system. Also I identified the main cause that occurs the change of meaning, that is ‘economics of language’. Furthermore, by exemplifying the change of meaning in Korean and Chinese loan words, I examined the characteristics that appeared in both loan words during its assimilation to native language. In the end of part 4, I analyzed the change of meaning in the terms of application which appear in Japanese and Western loan words of Chinese language.
As discussed above, it is noticeable that Chinese language has accepted foreign language more autonomously than Korean language by diversifying its method on adopting foreign language. Chinese loan words were formed nearly as Chinese language, therefore the number of words that brings up foreign air is much lesser than that of Korean language. This reflects their national consciousness, the will to preserve national culture. Therefore, it’s safe to say that the psychology of national consciousness determines the psychology of language, and the psychology of language determines the method on adopting foreign language.
The interaction between Korea and China has more become active nowadays. Through this study, I identified the characteristics of Korean and Chinese loan words by comparing the difference of them, and I hope that it would decrease the level of anxiety to both country learners associated with learning loan words.
