This is to provide analysis on the literary style and characteristics of vocabulary during the age of enlightenment by examining 「So-nyeon」, the well-known magazine of enlightenment literature. Analysis on 「So-nyeon」so far was limited to examine several issues including modernity of poetries, literary style of a new-style novel, changing patterns of literary style generally shown on magazines during the age of enlightenment and creation of new terminologies due to introduction of western culture. Till now there has been only few analysis on literary style and characteristics of vocabulary of the age of enlightenment examining「So-nyeon」. This will explain the general characteristics of the age of enlightenment about Korean and individual features of 「So-nyeon」by the following process of analysis.
In chapter Ⅱ, historical characteristics of the age of enlightenment is introduced and analysis on general features of literary style and vocabularies on the age of enlightenment of Korean is provided. By examining literary style and vocabularies on 「So-nyeon」, transition stage of Korean during the age of enlightenment and individual characteristic disclosed from 「So-nyeon」 is briefly verified.
On chapter Ⅲ, in order to inquire the difference in literary style among writings on different articles for various classes of reader, articles were categorized to literary, non-literary and other styles. For each category of article, patterns of literary style are classified to orthography, style, sentence structure examining literary styles commonly used in literature and non-literature. As a result, literary articles and non-literary articles shown difference in the usage of literary style. In literary articles, even though it was mostly style of Korean or a mixed style of writing Korean with Chinese characters in it. On the other hand, for non-literary articles with frequent rate of a word written in Chinese characters usage was found. The goal of practical articles to promote reader's understanding and to persuade them deemed to result in more usage of a Chinese characters, ideographs with capability to deliver meanings in an accurate and concise manner. Moreover, non-literary articles had shown a Chinese characters as functioning as independent lexeme and this is an evidence of transitional changes of literary style during the age of enlightenment which also affect the process of changes from a style of writing Chinese to a mixed style of writing Korean with Chinese characters in it and finally to a style of writing Korean shown in 「So-nyeon」. Other articles except literary and non-literary ones did not show any common patterns but several literary styles were mixed as other articles.
In chapter Ⅳ, vocabularies used in 「So-nyeon」are classified by usage patterns due to different originations and word formations. Vocabularies classified by origination were divided to a native tongue, a word written in Chinese characters, an loan word from the West. Additionally, for word formation analysis, vocabularies were categorized to derived word and compound word. Usage of a derivative suffix were common in derived word and a mimetic word were used in various patterns for compound word. Another findings were the unique formation style of a native tongue and a word written in Chinese characters. For other vocabularies, word formation style of country name or personal name of an loan word from the West by mixture of heading or main characters is introduced and this deemed to be influenced by a word written in Chinese characters of contract phenomenon.
