The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the trade names in Chon-an district into three groups; Chinese language trade names, Native language trade names and Foreign language trade names and compare their distributional differences according to industrial and regional categories.
The number of trade names analyzed in this sample survey is 3382. Chinese language trade names take the first place accounting for 39.8 percent of all(1347). Foreign trade names amount to 34.9 percent (1180). On the other hand, native language trade names and mixed languages trade names amount to only 12.9 percent(437) and 12.4 percent(418). Chinese language trade names are found by three times much more than native language trade names, and foreign language trade names and native language trade names are used by the ratio of 2.7 to l. It shows that native language is not employed frequently as a trade name in Chon-an.
First, this result can be analyzed specifically by means of industrial classifications. Many native language trade names are found in singing rooms(21.8%), stationery shops(20.4%), shoes' stores(17.6%), tea houses and game rooms(17.2%). But in billiard halls and dress shops, the percent of using trade names originating from native language fall into small portion, 5.7%, 6.3% and 9% each. Foreign language trade names, conversely, hold the majority of three-fourths or more(75.9%) in coffee houses. Foreign language trade names also show high frequency in restaurants, dress shops and children's clothes shops. (64.2%, 56.8% and 54.5% each) But they have remarkable low frequency in barber shops(5.9%) and tea houses(6.4%). From the distributional differences, it can be inferred that foreign languages are frequently selected for trade names, especially in women-targeted and fad-sensitive industries.
On the other hand, of the entire number of Chinese language trade names, men-targeted industries like barber's shops and tea houses take up high distributional ratio(85.3 and 75.6%). It can be summarized as follows; the shops which aim at men as their primary customers, for example, barber's shops and tea houses preferred Chinese language trade names while women-targeted and young people-targeted shops like restaurants and coffee houses preferred foreign languages trade names.
Second, I surveyed the relationships between three regions(①the east part of Chon-an, (② the west part of Chon-an and ③ town(eup) and township(myeon)) and three types of trade names(Chinese language, foreign languages and native language). More than half of the shops in eup·myeon use Chinese trade names(52.8%) and 36.3 percent of shops in the west part of Chon-an also use Chinese trade names. Foreign languages trade names are most used in the east part of Chon-an(40.8%). Native language shows relatively high occurrences in eup·myeon(15.7%) compared with the east part(10.3%) and the west part(14.9%). This phenomenon attributes to the Chinese language's strong influence on eup·myeon, rather than native language's own influences on that place. According to the survey, foreign languages and Chinese language trade names hold the majority of all the trade names in Chon-an while native language trade names take only one-tenth of all(12.9%). So we have much problems in educating Korean and purifying it.
It is important to find out the reasons why Chinese and foreign languages are used more widely than native language and the ways how we can keep our own language from the mixed foreign language trade names. I made four suggestions for restoration of our native language.
l. If there are our own words for foreign languages, we have to choose native language words as an alternative. Mass-media's role is very important to do this.
2. Policy makers should prefer native language to foreign language in registering trade names.
3. The government should render aid to the shops which use native language trade names.
4. All the speakers, especially intellectuals, must make much of our own native language and love it.
