A study of the Korean [V-e cwu-] Expressions In Korean, there are many [V-V] expressions, which contain two verbs in sequence. The two verbs involved seem to be combined and used as one word. Hence, they have been analyzed traditionally as complex auxiliary verbs and/or as what is called “Serial Verb Constructions (SVC).” However, according to Chae (2015a, 2015b, 2016), the [V-V] expressions in Korean can be divided into three types of constructions: auxiliary verb constructions, converb/adverbial constructions, and idiomatic constructions. This thesis, on the basis of the analysis of Chae, examines the validity of the three-way distinction with reference to the data in a dictionary and a corpus. Among the [V-V] expressions, we are particularly focusing on the [V-e cwu-] expressions. These expressions are distinctive in their complex realization patterns. Despite these complexities, we have observed that [V-e cwu-] expressions, as a subtype of [V-V] expressions, can be analyzed into the three constructions mentioned above: the auxiliary verb constructions, converb/adverbial constructions and idiomatic constructions. The meaning of cwu- as an auxiliary verb is assumed to be 'to perform an action (V) as a favor for someone'. One of the meanings of cwu- in the converb/adverb construction, which is a main verb, is assumed to be ‘the NP is affected by an effect of V-ing.’ The meaning of cwu- in the idiomatic construction is assumed to be a combination of these two meanings. In order to evaluate the three-way distinction system in Chae (2015a, 2015b, 2016), we examined actual data. Firstly, we examined [V-e cwu-] expressions listed in a dictionary and found out that most of them are not (compound) words but phrases. Secondly, we examined [V-e cwu-] expressions in a corpus and found out that they can be analyzed as one of the three constructions. Of course, many of them are ambiguous between two or three of the constructions. Around 86% of the expressions are realizations of the auxiliary verb construction and around 14%of them are realizations of the idiomatic construction. The idiomatic [V-e cwu-] construction is considered to be idiomatic mainly due to the existence of the complement [NP-eykey]. The verb cwu- cannot have a [NP-eykey] as its complement when it functions as an auxiliary verb. In addition, the verb does not have the properties of main verbs when it occurs with [NP-eykey]. We have seen that we cannot predict the existence of [NP-eykey] on the basis of the preceding verb not only from a syntactic point of view but also from a semantic point of view. Hence, [NP-eykey ... V-e cwu-] expressions can only be analyzed as idiomatic constructions.
