The purpose for this study is to establish the necessity of Chinese character education for academic literacy enhancement of multi-cultural background middle school students, to select instructional Chinese characters after analyzing 『Standard Korean for Middle School Students』, and to suggest effective education method.
Multi-cultural family children are proficient at Korean speaking and listening in everyday life as they graduate from elementary school, but they still suffer from their low academic achievement because they have low academic literacy, the ability they are able to follow school class.
In other words, Multi-cultural background students are wanting in reading and writing ability compared with general Korean families’ students, therefore they show low academic achievement. After immigrated children of multi-cultural families finish KSL(Korean as a second language) course, they want to go into formal education, but they also have difficulty in succeeding academic performance.
A lot of researches related to Korean eduction for multi-cultural families’ children have been done with elementary school as the center. Arranging KSL education method for academic literacy enhancement of multi-cultural background middle school students is urgent.
Because 70% of Korean vocabulary is Sino-Korean words, Korean education must be paired with Chinese character education. Especially since learning activity vocabulary, thinking tool words, and technical terms are mainly Sino-Korean words, multi-cultural background students need to learn Sino-Korean words and improve their vocabulary. If they learn Chinese characters, they will know the meanings of vocabulary clearly, so improve vocabulary ability. Furthermore they can improve not only vocabulary related to learning but also academic literacy.
LBH(Learning By Hint) method which uses hint function of Chinese character can help multi-cultural background students improve Sino-Korean words and academic literacy.
