Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the readability and suitability of printed educational materials related to metabolic syndrome in South Korea.
Methods: Data were collected 15 printed educational materials related from metabolic syndrome from public health centers in Seoul. The data were evaluated using following assessment tools : The 9 Graded Korean Vocabulary Classification for assessment of the readability level, The Korean version of SAM(Suitability Assessment of Materials) for assessment of the suitability.
Results: Overall average of the readability was 3.0th grade level. The percentage of 1st to 4th grade words was 79.4%. The printed educational material related to metabolic syndrome were written as below elementary school 4th grade reading level. It means that the materials are written above recommended reading levels.
In suitability assessment, 2(13.3%)of 15 materials were scored as superior, 12(80.0%) scored adequate and 1(6.7%) scored inadequate. The total average score of suitability was 57.9 out of 100 which means adequate. However, there are limitation in some items such as "summary and review" and "context is given first" due to limited writing pages.
Conclusions: Readability and suitability of printed educational materials for metabolic syndrome were evaluated as adequate level. However, various tools should be used and developed to evaluate more accurate readability. Also, in order to increase readers' understanding, health educational materials should be written well-suited to target groups.
