Korean language is predicate centered and final endings are given a great deal of weight on predicates. Moreover, the final endings function as a factor which determines the types of sentences so in Korean language education, it is very important to study the final endings. However, because the final endings don't have just one meaning and one function, it's necessary to teach not only their syntactic usage but also the various meanings and functions of them. Since the learners who are studying Korean as their second language have only a few chances to be exposed to and acquire the various functions of the final endings naturally, there is a need to propose the final ending in an educational way.
The purpose of this study is to propose effective educational methods of Korean declarative final endings to Korean Learners of the beginning level. Therefore, some typical declarative final endings in Korean language education were established and the meanings and the usage of them were analyzed. Then, whether they were presented appropriately in Korean language education was also examined.
In Chapter 2, the meanings and the usage of each of the final endings were examined and based on the results, the functions of them were presented.
In Chapter 3, by surveying the Korean language textbooks with respect to the coverage of the declarative final endings.
In Chapter 4, based on the results of the textbook analysis in Chapter3, a construct teaching method for the various meanings and functions of Korean declarative final endings was proposed. As the result of this analysis, there was no textbook that presents teaching order of declarative final ending systematic. And also it is difficult to find proper basis that can decide the teaching order of declarative final endings. The results were the six declarative final endings such as ‘이에요/예요’, ‘-아요/어요’, ‘-(으)세요’, ‘입니다’, ‘-습니다/ㅂ니다’, ‘-아/어’. The audio-lingual teaching method was used.
Consequently, teaching Korean as a foreign language requires a means of settling this problem that pass the limit.
There is a need for declarative final endings in Korean language to be kept studying constantly with respect to the way of learning so that Korean learners can make the best use of the functions of the declarative final endings.
