(Abstract)

We are living in the world full of color terms, which not only have referential realizations, but also convey figurative meanings on the basis of everyday experiences. Referential realizations of color terms include ‘red apple’, ‘green leaves’, ‘blue sky’, etc. Color terms also have figurative meanings as in ‘black mood’, ‘red market’, ‘feel blue’, etc.
This study aims to compare the figurative meanings of basic color terms in English and Korean and find out the similarities and differences between the two languages. To do this, this thesis did a comprehensive study on the figurative meanings of the most basic color terms in English and Korean in terms of metaphor and metonymy. English has 11 basic color terms: black, white, red, green, yellow, blue, brown, pink, orange, and gray, while Korean has only 5 basic color terms: black, white, red, yellow, and blue. For the comparison of the figurative meanings of basic color terms between English and Korean, 5 basic color terms were chosen which are common in the two languages: black, white, red, yellow, and blue.
The results of this study are as follows:
Most of the color terms in both English and Korean have similar referential meanings and extended meanings. These two languages also produce several different meanings. It should be concluded, from what has been said above, that color terms are systematically motivated by semantic extension mechanisms, and that most of expressions exhibit metonymic motivation, upon which numerous color terms are based and then extended metaphorically.
