(Abstract)
The purpose of this study is to find the relationship between animations' characters and their regional dialects use, and explore how such dialects are translated into target language. Given that studies on dialect translation are concentrated in examining American/British literature, the necessity of analyzing cases in films, especially animation films was confirmed.
In this , dialect translation examples in animation are categorized into 4 sections, which include 1)standard SL→TL's dialect, 2)SL's dialect→TL's dialect, 3)SL's dialect→standard TL and 4)standard SL→ standard TL. (The fourth category was ruled out in the because of its irrelevance to the purpose.) Based on this category, three animations were selected: Hoodwinked, Flushed Away and Rise of the Guardians.
The findings of the dialect translation analysis are as follows:
◇ TL's regional dialect can be useful to express characters' personality and their native place.
◇ It can make characters more realistic as a dialect reminds cinema audience of a certain region.
◇ If A region's dialect is used mixed with B region's dialect in TL, it might cause confusions to the audience.
◇ In some cases, SL's regional dialect may clash with TL's regional dialect in terms of impression or image.
◇ Moreover, when SL's regional dialect is intentionally used in films, translating it into standard TL may weaken the film maker's intention and a character's unique personality.
