The purpose of this research is to explore instruction methods for English speaking students who do not have a list of mimetic expressions in Koran language utilizing “mimetic words / verb" syntax. First, the argues that “mimetic words / verb" expressions will expand the list of mimetic expressions without causing burden on memory and will enable students to secure fluency in Korean language. Then, it uses corpus of the 1st level verbs to select “mimetic words / verb" type expressions based on which “mimetic expression / verb" type instruction method is designed and presented.
Mimetic expressions are at the peripheral of all the expressions studied by students of Korean language. Compared to general adverbs, they are often used in combination with specific set of verbs. Therefore, if mimetic expressions are presented together with the verbs learned at elementary level, it will lessen the memory burden of students and enable them to expand their vocabulary list. Mimetic expressions are especially unfamiliar with English speaking students. Therefore, if mimetic expressions are presented with "mimetic words / verb" that corresponds to an English verb, it will very likely facilitate their learning process. Consequently, mimetic expressions were presented to them in the form of “mimetic words / verb" rather than presenting mimetic expressions only.
For instruction of “mimetic words / verb" type expressions, a list of expression has been created. The study was designed for students with medium level proficiency. Therefore, the used the corpus of mimetic expressions from the 1st level verbs and the list of mimetic expressions by Jo Changgyu (2005) that they had likely to have studied at the elementary level and created a list of “mimetic words / verbs" expressions. To facilitate understanding of English speaking students, a list of English vocabularies that correspond to “mimetic words / verbs" were created based on COCA.
For pedagogic procedure for instruction of “mimetic words / verbs", the procedure of “presentation-practice-transfer" based on Communicative Approach. In presentation stage, “mimetic words / verb" were shown with English verbs and their meaning was explained to students to facilitate their understanding. In practice stage, various games were played to enable students to memorize and remember the meaning of “mimetic words / verb". In transfer stage, fairy tales or stories were composed and applied for actual life situation practice.
