The study aims to figure out the usage of and the semantic difference between Korean structural expressing hope such as ‘-고 싶다’, ‘-았으면/었으면 좋겠다’, and ‘-았으면/었으면 하다’ for the students of the Korean language.
These three hopeful phrases are taught and learned as if they were similarly expressing hope, only to be differently used in the respective situations and contexts of real conversations. Accordingly, the study aims to look into semantic differences of these expressions that show different patters of usage.
To do so, the study, first of all, looked into what is being taught in Korean language schools and what problems they have, by analyzing the teaching materials of each institution, to see how the expressions are being taught in those language schools. In addition, the study tried to find out, through a corpus analysis, what characteristics the respective hopeful expressions such as ‘-고 싶다’, ‘-았으면/었으면 좋겠다’ and ‘-았으면/었으면 하다’ show in real conversations. The research made a comparative analysis of syntactic restrictions and semantic differences of each expression, based on this analysis.
The expression ‘-고 싶다’ is personal and affirmative since a speaker's hope is towards himself due to syntactic restrictions of the subject as the first person, while ‘-았으면/었으면 좋겠다’ and ‘-았으면/었으면 하다’ are public and requesting because a speaker's hope is towards a listener with no restriction of the subject as the first person. Therefore, ‘-고 싶다’ was defined as a speaker-centered hopeful expression, and ‘-았으면/었으면 좋겠다’ and ‘-았으면/었으면 하다’ were clarified as a listener-oriented hopeful expression.
Furthermore, the study found that ‘-았으면/었으면 좋겠다’ largely showed an indirect speech act, and ‘-았으면/었으면 하다’ displayed a commanding speech act.
Moreoever, the expression ‘-고 싶다’ is more frequently used in conversations with intimate friends, while the phrase ‘-았으면/었으면 하다’ is more often utilized in formal conversations.
