This study takes a sensible view on Jeong Rae-Dong and elaborates upon Jeong’ introduction and translation of modern Chinese literature, which was not received full attention. Based on his excellent Chinese and profound knowledge, Jeong has played an important role in translating and introducing Chinese literature during the 1930s. This study takes notice of Jeong’ achievement in Chinese literature during the period, focusing on his personal experiences during his stay in China as a student, his attitude shown by his critique on or introduction of modern Chinese literature and his feature and characteristics in his translation. Through these analyses, it revaluates Jeong Rae-Dong‘ status in the promotion of cultural exchange between Korea and China. The analyses are divided into three parts: Jeong’ student life in Beijing, which became the groundwork of his study on Chinese literature, his critique of modern Chinese literature and translation. Jeong Rae-Dong became interested in and started concentrating on modern Chinese literature when he moved to Beijing for study in 1942. Based on his excellent Chinese, it is assumed that he was well qualified in understanding Chinese literature. While he was studying in Beijing, Jeong wrote a number of poems and s. He also took a leading role in introducing modern Chinese literature to Korea through translation. On the other hand, he had anarchistic perspective as he took part in anarchist activities. This influenced on not only his attitude to modern Chinese literature, but also his critique on it. The period of his student life in Beijing is the foothold of his study on modern Chinese literature which is a critical factor to understand his works and entire life. Jeong has introduced existing situation of modern Chinese literature, authors, and book reviews. More specifically, his introduction of modern Chinese literature situation is systematical since he pictured general outline of the modern Chinese literature development over different aspects: literary school, authors and works. Introducing authors, he focused representative authors and often referred to outstanding female writers. It is significant that a number of authors were introduced to Korea by Jeong Rae-Dong as the first time. Besides, Jeong suggested his own view through systematic explanation and plentiful contexts, referring different aspects of modern Chinese literature though book review. His introduction of modern Chinese literature is analyzed, linking not only to internal perspectives of literacy circles, but also all other matters related to literacy circles and it basically meets historical background of cultural development. Moreover, the introduction of anarchistic literacy school is unusual feature in Korea’ process to receive modern Chinese literature, which is assumed to play a role in improving Korean’ awareness of Chinese anarchist literature. Apart from literature work review, Jeong Rae-Dong did a lot of translations. He did translation in various genre including poems, plays, fictions and book reviews. Especially in modern poems, he selected several representative authors and the pieces. Translated poems broke away from traditional poems in terms of contexts and format, which described Chinese people’ daily lives as it stood. He did his best to deliver the original meaning and format however, he seldom changed the format in order to make the most of the original messages. Six plays, the major works from six famous authors are translated by Jeong as he tried to introduce as many works as possible. For play translation, original texts were translated as they were. At the same time, they still kept the rhythm as natural Korean language. Based on these, it is said he had an outstanding language skills in both Korean and Chinese. Through preface and footnote, it is seen that Jeong Rae-Dong cared readers. There is only one fiction translated by him. Jeong did literal translation for this novel. For the translation of book reviews, he rather chose worthy work pieces to be introduced to Korea than prefer works based on his own taste in order to contribute to Korean literacy circles. As it is seen, his translation job had positive influences on the process for Korea to receive modern Chinese literature. As it is mentioned above, this study analyzes Jeong Rae-Dong’ work on introduction and translation of modern Chinese literature. It revealed that Jeong is one of the most critical and outstanding writers who laid the foundation stone for modern Chinese literature study in Korea. And , therefore, his work is considered important in modern cultural exchange between Korea and China.
