This study is intended to find out ways of teaching auxiliary particles -eun and -neun by identifying the problems through analyzing the ways in which to teach the usage and meaning of -eun and -neun in the case of Korean language texts at beginners' level.
To sum up the results of analyzing the Korean language texts at beginners' level, the particles of -eun and -neun are not clearly explained grammatically, and the methods of presenting the explanations of those particles are limited. Accordingly, it is necessary to present explanations and example sentences by using generic terms and to make those explanations simple and accurate.
The analysis results are presented concretely as follows.
Firstly, seven out of the ten texts analyzed do not explain the particles -eun and -neun while three do. This means that the composition of the texts does not consider the situation of learners. Secondly, the results of analyzing the ways of presenting the semantic characteristics such as topics and contrasts in those current Korean language texts at beginners' level are as follows. Eight texts present explanations of topics and themes, and five explain contrasts and emphases. None of the ten texts present any explanations of the particles -eun and -neun.
Both learners of Korean as a foreign language and native speakers of Korean committed errors in using case particles and auxiliary particles. Native speakers of Korean commit more errors in using auxiliary particles '-eun and -neun' than in using case particles '-i and -ga.' Chinese-speaking and Japanese-speaking learners perceive auxiliary particles '-eun and -neun' better than English-speaking ones, but very often they still mistakenly respond to the particles '-eun and -neun'. Unlike native speakers of Korean, fairly high percentage of the foreign learners of Korean cannot perceive the usage of auxiliary particles -eun and -neun, and the difference between the two. Based on these facts, it is necessary to educate learners of Korean at beginners' level in the usage and meaning of auxiliary particles -eun and -neun. Therefore, the followings are the ways which this study presents are helpful for teaching auxiliary particles -eun and -neun in Korean language texts at beginners' level.
Firstly, unlike native speakers of Korean, learners of Korean as a foreign language should clearly be presented with the fact that auxiliary particles -eun and -neun are applied according to the phonetical condition. Secondly, there should be texts which enable learners of Korean to perceive the usage of the auxiliary particles -eun and -neun, and to apply them appropriately. Thirdly, using generic terms, explanations and example sentences showing the usage of the auxiliary particles -eun and -neun need to be presented.
