Korean language learners have problem understanding reading materials they meet outside the classroom because those materials are not revised for them. Korean language learners tend to analyze the reading materials when they find it interesting in everyday life. Therefore, learners lose their interest and even give up reading the materials when the materials are too long, or contain too many vocabularies. However, the way of reading education in Korean classroom cannot solve this problem because present Korean education is focused on the intensive reading approach which emphasizes analysis of the texts, grammatical elements and vocabularies.
Learners’ reading activities, outside the classroom, have an effect on improving learners’ Korean proficiency. Therefore, Korean teachers should help learners be close to the reading materials outside the classroom, and should provide the learners various reading materials since the reading materials that are dealt in the classroom are limited. This study suggests extensive reading approach as a method of effective reading education that learners can do reading activities with interest inside and outside the classroom.
This study suggests comics as the first step of extensive reading for the learners who are exposed to the extensive reading approach for the first time, or who feel difficulty in reading education through extensive reading approach because of the large amount of the reading materials. The reason why this study suggests comics as the method of reading education is that learners generally tend to feel friendly to the comics since it contains pictures as well as texts. I expect the pictures of comics can help learners understand the texts in the way of extensive reading approach where the general understanding of the texts is important.
In this point of view, this study examined the effectiveness of comics as a reading material for extensive reading. Based on the result of the examination, this study suggested extensive reading program through comics.
