The purpose of this study is to motivate early adolescents to teach Korean writing with fun proposing the method applied cartoon to lesson.
The ultimate goal when teaching Korean is to improve and acquire four balanced skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. But early adolescents who learn Korean as the foreign language can't write Korean well compared to speaking and listening. Therefore we have to reinforce to teach writing for making full use of balanced Korean. Thus, this study suggests plans for early adolescents who are poor at writing through cartoon.
To suggest effective educational plans in chapter 2, I searched cartoons as a Korean writing material and teenagers' traits in foreign language learning before definite plans.
'Early adolescents' are from 10 to 14years old students who learn Korean as the foreign language. I grasp cartoon is to communicate with drawing and writing and to express story and message freely and aggressively with simplification and exaggeration of shape on purpose. And I present merits of cartoon as writing materials.
First, cartoon is very effective to motivate learners with interesting pictures and contents.
Second, cartoon gives us chance to use both left and light brains because of visual aids in writing learning.
Third, cartoon is good material to learn expressions and understand situation easily because it shows us real life with drawing and writing.
Fourth, cartoon is easy to be copied, be kept and be made as a teaching aid.
Fifth, cartoon is useful to acquire cultures of each nation in cartoon as well as just to learn language.
Sixth, cartoon is available to be supplementary of Korean class along the learners' level.
Finally, cartoon can make learners do lots of activities such as keeping a diary, writing letter, making a on interview and summarizing which are appropriate to achievement.
In chapter 3, I suppose teaching plans of Korean writing applied cartoon along the merits of cartoon and I look into two kinds of writing strategies applied picture and the other language skills.
Writing strategy applied picture is to describe characters, describe situation and complete word balloon with guessing the pictures.
Writing strategy with the other language is through reading, listening and speaking.
Writing activities through reading is to complete word balloon, make next story, write a letter to characters, write topic, arrange stories, change cartoon into stories, make role play scripts and summarize cartoon. Writing activities through listening is to dictate, complete word balloon after listening, arrange stories and complete word balloon after listening. And writing activities through speaking is to do role play after completing scripts. In this study I motivate learners who think writing is difficult and just an assignment to improve writing skill with natural and profound writing activities.
I expect next things through cartoon method in Korean writing class.
First, cartoon can motivate learners to write with fun.
Second, cartoon can make learner use experienced topic and give learners less anxiety by the writing activities along the appropriate level.
Third, cartoon can raise learners' imagination through a wide range of topics and new and various writing activities.
Fourth, cartoon can improve communicative skill by connecting with the other language skills.
I expect cartoon method in writing class to be applied well to early adolescents and to make a sacrifice myself for study and growth of developed and effective writing learning.
