This study aimed to reduce the incidence of industrial accidents among migrant workers due to incorrect communication in industry. 16 kinds of texts related to industrial safety of migrant workers were analyzed, and the list of basic Korean terms for certain vocations was presented.
As the number of foreigners who migrate to Korea increases, a variety of changes have been shown in Korean society from family, the basic unit of society, to workplace, the root of industrial structure. Especially, as there is a rising interest in migrant workers, who are taking a large percentage, various discussions and studies have been conducted related to them. However, many studies are still insufficient since the amount and the topics required in this regard are too various.
Chapter 2 addressed the theoretical background and current condition of migrant workers. Teaching of Korean for certain vocations, which was a sub-sector of education of Korean as a foreign language, was compared with ESP(English for Specific Purpose) in English education, and the concepts of basic Korean terms for certain vocations were defined based on various theories concerning vocabulary classification. Besides, the investigation on the current condition of migrant workers clarified that construction and manufacturing industries took the largest percentage of sectors in which migrant workers in Korea were involved and that the incidence of industrial accidents in those sectors also was the highest. Thus, the study subject was limited to construction and manufacturing sectors, the biggest two groups involved.
Chapter 3 adopted the 'raw corpus' method to input, by hand, the 16 kinds of texts published by Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency, which represent all other texts. Based on the input raw corpus, 49,552 words in the construction sector, 21,764 words in the manufacturing sector, and 15,842 words in other sectors - 87,158 words in total - were collected in the final corpus. Then the vocabulary for industry and nouns, verbs, and adjectives related to safety were extracted. A questionnaire was prepared with the extracted vocabulary and the frequency of using the words in actual work-sites was investigated.
In Chapter 4, the list of basic Korean words for specific vocations - 1316 in the construction sector and 896 in the manufacturing sector was collected - from high frequency of use to low in the order. The list of selected words was analyzed for each work situation of the construction sector and the manufacturing sector, and words to be learned before and at the beginning of working at the workplace were classified to the beginning, middle, and advanced levels.
Chapter 5 presented the model of basic vocabulary education for migrant workers by means of the list of basic words selected for the education plan.
Since this study used texts concerning industrial safety of each related sector for migrant workers, it can be utilized as basic data in producing textbooks with situational examples in actual workplace for migrant workers, and in making curriculums such as vocabulary learning to reduce industrial accidents of them.
