This study used intense questionnaires to 21 immigrant women who are interracial married to Korean men in order to check the characteristics of adjusting psychologically and socially in Korea as immigrant women. This study uses qualitative comparative analysis(fs/QCA) to show multiple causality.
The following shows adjusted or unadjusted types of married immigrant women regarding psychologically and socially.
When surveying the sociological characteristics of the population, it was discovered that the majority of married immigrant women in Korea, who were psychologically well adjusted, tended to be relatively older, married through arranged marriage agency, introduced by friends, relatives, or religious groups.
Conversely, it was also discovered that married immigrant women in Korea that were not psychologically well adjusted tended to have own religions, lack Korean citizenship, or do not live with their parents.
Characteristics of socially adjusted married immigrant women in Korea is that they have own religions most of the time. Those women also often live with their parents because of low income, and most of time they are also relatively older.
On the other hand, those women who are not socially well adjusted often have short term marriage period, do not have parents or children, or do not have Korean citizenship.
It is necessary to find solutions to accept and deal with interracial marriage that occur in various ways in Korea.
It's important to accept various religions in Korea. Most of time the women’s own religions can be helpful in keeping their own identities when these women are trying to adjust to a new environment.
Second, even though there are large cultural differences in everyday life, if traditional marriage values are high, the women tended to adjust well psychologically.
On the other hand, even if great cultural differences in everyday life do not exist, as long as traditional marriage value is low, psychological maladjustments tend to persist.
Socially well-adjusted types are associated with high self- esteem, even when there is little affection between the married couples.
Social unadjusted types display a high level of traditional marriage values, life satisfaction, affection between married couples, and commitment each other.
These women continually experience conflict when attempting to adjust due to gaps in traditional value, and cultural differences in Korea. Confusion and conflicts arise not only because they are in the process of adjusting of to a new culture, but they are also trying to preserve their own cultures.
A third aspect of the psychological adjusted can be observed in the conflict and resolution area, where emotional expression, passivity towards conflict, and acceptance of diverse cultures are high.
The psychologically maladjusted type shows a low level of conflict, passivity towards conflict and high level of acceptance of diverse cultures.
Socially adjusted type shows a high level of expression of emotions and self respect.
Social unadjusted type shows a low level of acceptance concerning diverse cultures and expression of one’s own culture.
When there are couple conflicts, they might confront or ignore conflicts, depending on the situation and opponents.
Fourth, surprising results are founded in social support areas.
Psychological adjusted type shows the supports from family, social organization and religion are low.
Characteristics of psychologically maladjusted type shows that support from family, friends, and relatives and self respect are low, even though they have high level of support from social organizations.
Social adjusted type shows a low level of support from family, friends, relatives, and social organizations, even though they have high level of support from religion.
Socially unadjusted type show that they have a high level of supports from friends, relatives, social organizations, but a low level of religious support and self respect.
Research shows married immigrant women have stress and cultural conflicts occurring from too much attention from family and society, even though they are logically aware that this attention derives from care over that person.
Practical suggestions for the social business model based on this research are following.
First, education for the various cultures should be provide in order to adjust to marriages in early period to interracial married families.
Interracial married families have many conflicts and difficulties in early marriage stage because of different everyday life styles and cultural gaps.
It is helpful to offer Korean language education and family life educational programs for the better adjustment in different culture and these supports can reduce isolation and insecurity through family relationship and social environment.
Second, Even though there are opportunities to learn Korean through social educational organization or social welfare organizations, these people cannot take advantage of these opportunities because of family and environment situation. Especially, it's important to pay special attention to the farming and fishing communities.
Third, in later stages of marriage, where the wife remains at home and takes care of the children, opportunities to meet other people and converse in Korean are limited.
It's important for these women to have support system concerning Korea and Korean culture, even though there are limitations regarding foreigners adapting to Korean culture like natives.
Based on these social supports, job opportunities for these people arise. Highly educated immigrant women with various language skills can provide our society with useful human resources. These opportunities provide stable life for them, and are helpful in unifying our society.
