One of the language feature Japanese has is 'あいづち'. It is considered one of the language culture by the Japanese people who lay emphasis on harmony in human relationship. It comes under the Korean back chanel expressions but there are several differences in understanding of the back chanel expressions between Japan and Korean even though both Japan and Korea share similar ways of thinking in culture. And these differences are reflected in daily langugage uses.
Accorgingly, this study is focused on how different the Korean back chanel expressions are from the Japanese. First of all, I have studied the definition, function, and langugage form of the back chanel expressions both Korean and Japanese language. Based on this, I made an investigation into TV programs.
According to the results, the Japanese people uses the back chanel expression more frequently and in more various ways than the Korean people. Also it was found the women in both countries use more than men. This is believed that the Japanese accept 'あいづちことば' more positively than the Korean, I think. In addition, I have found the clear differences in the relative degree of familarity, the upper and lower classes, official and private affairs, and age when people of the two countries say あいづちことば . I have observed that the Japanese people often use the あいづちことば regardless of their language partner. but the relative degree of familarity, official and private affairs have influences on the Japanese people when they say 'あいづちことば '. Unlike Japanese, the back chanel expression in Korean depends on the language partner the Korean people talk to and especially, whether the partner is the upper or lower classes affects the Korean people because of the long Confucian tradition.
I have great emphasis on that these differences can cause misunderstandings when Korean and Japanese have a conversation. Therefore, I think people of the two countries would understand each other generously rather than that Japanese people regard Korean people too sensitive to the conversation partner and that Korean people consider Japanese people too straight and frank.
This also can be an important issue in field of education. That's because to understand the Japanese language culture is essential and communication without misunderstandings can be completed by this. Thus, It is necessary to practice a conversation in a real-life situation and to learn Japanese language by various language materials such as TV programs, Dramas and movies. By means of these, I think, students can find out the differences in the back chanel expressions which exist between both Korean and Japanese, and feel understood on a deep level about overall Japanese language culture.
