The purpose of this thesis is to examine the treatment of ending combinations in the dictionaries for Korean learners.
In the dictionaries for Korean Learners, many ending combinations are listed as headword, but they lack consistencies as a dictionary headword. So the heading used for ending combinations differs from one dictionary to another. Moreover, it lacks consistencies within the same dictionary, too.
In chapter two, some standards for the heading as an integrated ending are proposed, i.e. the possibility of a paradigmatic relation between a part of an ending combination and other endings, the change of syntactic and/or semantic function, the learning efficiency and the consistency in the dictionary itself.
In chapter three, ending combinations with a pre-final ending are observed according to the standards. And the following treatments are proposed: Among the -nun- (는) combinations, -nunkuna (-는구나), -nunkuman (-는구만), -nuntanta (-는단다), -nuntapsiko (-는답시고), -nuntanuni (-는다느니), -nuntako (-는다고) and -nuntanik'a (-는다니까) should be removed from the dictionaries as headwords. On the other hand, -nunte (-는데) and -nunci (-는지) should be listed. And among the -oss-combinations, -osstoramyun (-었더라면) and -osstontul (-었던들) and -ossca (-었자) should be listed as headwords.
In chapter four, ending combinations with a final ending are observed, and we proposed that -tagona (-다거나), -tako (-다고), -tanik'a (-다니까), -tamyonso (-다면서) should be removed from the dictionaries. On the contrary, -tani (-다니) should be added as a headword in the dictionaries.
In chapter five, ending combinations with an auxiliary particle are observed and we proposed that all of them should be removed from the dictionaries.
To summarize, we have observed that the majority of ending combinations in the dictionaries for Korean learners are redundant. And we hope that linguists interested in the editing or the revision of the dictionaries for Korean learners find this study useful.
