The purpose of this researck was to propose an effective method for Korean language edcation for the korean residents in south America having grasped the actual situation of korean language education now being conducted in the South American region.
Although the importance of the education of overseas Koreans for their mother tongue has been well acknowledged, the reality is that researches on realistic and practical method for korean language education are insufficient in this regard. In fact, there have almost never had conducted researches on Korean language education, in particular, in South American region. To educate mother tongue for overseas Koreans, it is considered that strenus efforts have to be exerted to devise an effective program for korean language education that con be practically applied to the locale of training having considered variety of variadles, including the distinctive features of the region where overseas koreans reside, history of immigration, ages, and so forth.
In this , researcher has presented a method for Korean language education that can be practically applied to the locate of edcation on the basis of the needs of students as teachers, having analyzed the relevant curriculum and textbooks after investigataed the actual situal of korean language education for the korean residents in South America first.
to present an effective educational method, researcher discussed the topics in a detailed manner following to each Chapter.
In Chapter 2, the concept of the kdrean residents in South America was defined, and also the present status of them and the history of immigration were investigated according to each country. Also the distinctive features of korean residents in South America were put together in a general term.
In Chapter 3, the Korean language education was largely divided into two: one that conducted for the Korean residents in Southt America, and another that conducted by the department of koreanology at the colleges or universities located in South America. And in Section 3.1 and 3.2, the actual conditions of the education for korean language along with cultural education, which has been conducted by the educational institution, was investigaed. Having examined the basic factors in relation to koran language class, such as the features of the educational institution, characteristics of korean language teachers and learners,etc., researcher has conducted a comparative analysis between the textbooksnow being used and webtext (Stud Korean) edited by the Overseas Korea language curriculum, 17 teachers were selected from korean Language schools located in Sounth American region and were asked to complete a questionnaire. In Section 3.3 having investigated the actual conditions of education for korean language and culture that has been conducting in the colleges currently by dividing it into the school that opened the Korean language course, title of course, the number of students, and learning stages, etc. then after, reaearcher proposed a means of settling the problems presented in the section 3.4bin a general term.
In Chapter 4, the learning environments, its characteristics and requirements or needs of the leaners were investigated and grasped through conducting a survey. To do this, the students of Korean language school in Paraguay, Whish was evaluated as an exemplary school, were selected and asked to fill out a questionnaire. Also, subjecting youths and middle-agere Who are residents in south America and currently staying in korea to this survey, researcher conducted in-depth interviews, and investigated the level pf consciousness of identity of korean residents in South America, and relations to Korean language, and background of learning Korean language and motivation, environment of using of korean language, and experience of learning Korean language at korean language school. And analyses of neede and requirements of learners were conducted.
In Chapter 5, researcher proposed a methad for Korean language education using visual materials in the program on the basis of the fact findings on Korean language education in South Amertca and the results from needs asalysis. In the proposal, having considered learnerd' age and their level of proficiency in Korean Language on the ground of Bilingual Education Theary and Learner-centered Instructional Method, ersearcher presented young learners in their early age the visual materials, such as a story of'happy world with TV fair tale', and for the adolescents, an actual lesson model utiltzing a movie, 'B-type Boyfriend,' was presented.
